To accept your offer and submit your seat deposit, head to our Note: You created an account when you applied. The admission seat deposit is non-refundable. After you register, the funds will be posted to your student account and applied to your first-term tuition.

You need to activate your student ID to get a smu.ca email address and an S-Number (or S#).

Before activating your SMU Student ID, you must accept your admission offer and pay your seat deposit through the .

After you accept the offer of admission, and the seat deposit funds are received, you will be able to active your SMU accounts.

When you activate your SMU account for the first time:

  • Go to the “Activate Your Account” page at 
  • Enter your A-Number (sent to you with your admission acceptance) and PIN (your initial PIN is your date of birth in DDMMYY format)
  • Create your account password
  • An S-Number and SMU email will then be provided so you can access various systems.

Use your new SMU email (smu.ca) address for access to:

  • On-campus computers and Wi-Fi
  • : Your SMU Outlook email account, and other MS Office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Note: your Saint Mary’s University email must be used for all official communications.
  • : used for course registration, viewing your tuition/fees (account summary by term), final grades, tax forms, and much more.

Use your new S-Number login credential for access to:

  • (The »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿ Learning Management System)
  • The application system
  • Access course content, announcements, and current grades
  • (SMUSA Health Waiver)

Health plan
Students who have adequate health coverage in Canada can opt out of the Saint Mary’s University Student Association’s (SMUSA) health coverage in SMUport with appropriate documentation. See  for more information.

Graduate Funding: Saint Mary’s University automatically considers new graduate students for internal funding. Students will be informed in their admission letter if they have been awarded funding.

Applications open Feb. 1

Living in residence connects you to university life and is a great way to gain new experiences and meet friends. Our student housing is connected to the rest of campus, meaning students don’t even need to go outside to get to their classes! Students can choose between various housing options including single, double and apartment-style rooms.

Applications for residence open as early as February 1, but note that space is limited and we strongly encourage you to apply early. Your residence deposit is due by May 15. Applications for residence are still considered as space allows after May 15. For more information on housing options, please visit our Housing and Residence pages. If you are interested in living on campus, please complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to the  with your new smu.ca email address and password. Here you can pay your residence application fee, create a student profile, and select your residence room preferences.
  2. Once your application has been completed, the Centre for Housing & Residence Life will email you (at your new smu.ca address) a Residence Agreement (contract).
  3. Return the completed Residence Agreement and pay the confirmation deposit by May 15 to ensure that your residence bed space is reserved.

Before you can register for your classes, you must accept your offer of admission, submit your seat deposit through the   and activate your SMU email to access Self-Service Banner. When you register for courses, you hold a seat in each class. Please be aware that your courses have financial and academic components, and Saint Mary’s University has set withdrawal dates and payment due dates.   2. Click “Enter Secure Area”
  3. Enter your Saint Mary’s email and password
  4. Search and register for your classes

We developed a video tutorial to assist you with the course registration process. You will also find detailed instructions on registering for classes on our website. Please note that registration for new graduate students begins in late April/early May.  For questions regarding specific course registration please consult with your Graduate Program Coordinator.

From the day you arrive on campus to the day you walk across the stage at convocation, there are staff members to help you find what you need at Saint Mary’s. Here are some places on campus that you may wish to become familiar with:

Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR): Located in Atrium 210, the FGSR office provides information, advice and services to students, staff and faculty on all issues across the university involving Graduate programs and research activities.

Student Success Centre: The Student Success Centre is a great resource for new students who need help navigating Self Service Banner for registration or who would like to take a campus tour.

Service Centre:  Located in the McNally building in room MM108. The Service Centre can assist you with questions regarding student loans, payments, confirmation of enrolment letters, RESP funding and general registration inquiries.

Student Centre: The Student Centre is where you will find the and Student Services. Student Services has lots of support for Saint Mary’s students including Career Services, Health Centre, Co-op Office, Student Success Coordinator, the Fred Smithers Centre for Student Accessibility, and the International Student Centre. Indigenous Student Advisor: As treaty people, guided by principles of reconciliation, Student Affairs and Services (SAAS) is committed to repairing relationships, amplifying Indigenous voices and developing strong institutional and community supports for Saint Mary’s Indigenous students. Indigenous Student Advising, under SAAS, is a hub of resources, supports and services connecting Indigenous students within  »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿, broadly across Mi'kma'ki and with community partners and the Elder In Residence.

Black Student Advisor: Black Student Advising, under Student Affairs and Services, is a hub of services, connections and opportunities for Black/African students within the Saint Mary’s community. The Black Student Advisor is a community liaison to the broader Black/African Nova Scotian community, and assists in connecting students with resources on campus, to ensure Black/African students have appropriate supports, programs, activities, and resources, while navigating their student success journeys!
